Idea: Using a Mirror – Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) – Part One

The idea to use a mirror came from an event that happened over a year ago. We were at a fancy dress party and my friend was wearing an amazing fairy/witch outfit with beautiful fantasy style make-up. She was using a mirror to take pictures of herself and it made a really beautiful effect. I thought we could use a mirror and see what happened.

I took a picture so it looks like she’s touching her face in the mirror.

We tried one with her looking directly at the camera.

Pulling her hair out of the way.

Touching the mirror.

Looking upset or confused.

Looking upset.

Trying out a different perspective.

When I saw this picture I realised that she looks self-conscious. She looks like she’s scrutinising herself.

She also looks upset and anxious here.

It was then that I realised I could link these picture with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). I then presented this idea at the crit.

I like these ideas but at the crit the tutor talked about adding embellishments so I wanted to carry on and see if I could make an idea with embellishments.
